How to Save Your Money (and Sanity!) this Holiday Season

Moms especially can get burned out by the busyness of the holidays. What often begins as an innocent quest for experiencing Christmas magic with one’s family becomes a hamster wheel of overscheduling, overspending and comparison.

Is there any way to simplify the holidays and make the most of the season for you and your little ones?

In this special holiday episode of the (Mostly) Stay-at-Home-Mom, Charmaine shares her real-life experience, confesses what she’s willing to drop this time of year, and gives practical advice for moms who want it all this Christmas. Listen in on the podcast below:

Moms: Kick Overspending to the Curb this Christmas

Creating a holiday budget is the cornerstone of stress-free festivities.

Start by listing everyone you plan to gift and setting a realistic spending limit for each person. Don’t forget to account for additional holiday expenses, such as special activities and charitable donations.

A well-planned budget allows you to align your spending with your values and prevents post-holiday debt. Consider buying ingredients for festive meals during sales and making homemade gifts in bulk to stretch your dollar further. I like to buy vanilla beans, split them and soak them in bourbon to create big batches of homemade vanilla I can divvy up into small bottles as meaningful handmade gifts.

Use the batch-making strategy to create multiple cost-effective gifts.

Moms: Free Up Your Calendar For Maximum Enjoyment

Beyond financial planning, it’s crucial to manage your time wisely during the holiday season.

Think of your schedule as a time budget.

Overscheduling can lead to burnout, detracting from the joy of the holidays. By treating time as a precious commodity, you can prioritize rest alongside celebration. You can enjoy meaningful moments with your family instead of the crushing overwhelm of meeting deadlines and ferrying from one hustled activity to the next. Think slow moments. Cherished memories.

This all happens by being intentional with your time.

Sit down and look at your December. Create a physical calendar to visualize your commitments and ensure there’s ample space for relaxation and spontaneity. Remember, the essence of holiday happiness lies not in a packed calendar but in creating meaningful memories with loved ones.

Not every moment has be documented on Instagram to be enjoyed. Prioritize connection over comparison and building memories out of the beautiful ordinary instead of busyness.

Reframe Beliefs to Create Healthy Expectations for the Holiday Season

As you navigate the holiday season, it’s important to reframe certain beliefs.

Let’s start with a basic reminder that bears repeating often: More gifts and activities don’t equate to more happiness.

Instead, focus on the quality of your interactions and experiences.

Advertising and nostalgia often influence our holiday expectations, but true magic is found in simplicity and togetherness. We can often look back on wonderful Christmas memories from childhood with rose-colored glasses. In an effort to gain back that childhood feeling for us and our children, we can create an epic scramble to check off an unending to-do list.

In reality, the best memories we have are probably the simplest, like baking sugar cookies with family members or singing along to Christmas songs on the radio. These moments don’t require a ton of heavy lifting– let them happen simply, without too much fuss.

You can always use nostalgia to share personal stories and traditions that emphasize these values with your kids. It’s okay to tell them what Christmas was like back then. It’s going to be stressful to recreate those memories with exactitude, however, so adjust your expectations.

Remember: Holiday memories are most often forged in the humble materials of simplicity.

When Less is More During a Consumption-Crazy Season

The holiday season can be a time of reflection on what truly matters.

For some, it may be a period to explore the deeper meaning of life and spirituality.

As you create your holiday plans, consider what is genuinely important to you and your family. This may involve resisting societal pressures to chase an elusive concept of “Christmas magic” and instead focusing on creating joy-filled moments that resonate with your values and beliefs.

As you listen to this special holiday edition of the (Mostly) Stay-at-Home Mom podcast, I hope you’ll find inspiration to transform your holiday experience into something truly special.

By embracing simplicity, thoughtful planning, and meaningful interactions, you can create a season filled with joy, love, and cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
