How To Change Your Mindset as a Mompreneur: 7 Effective Ways.

Being a mom boss feels so different, right?

The movies and the media make it seem like some Super Mom title, but if you’re anything like me, you just feel inadequate in all areas of life.

Some mornings you wake up excited and hyped, and some days, you find it difficult to adjust to living as a Mompreneur or as a working stay-at-home mom.

Well, let’s change that shall we? Here’s what you need to do to change your mindset for best embracing this exciting season of your life:

1. Accept Your New Reality:

I see mothers talk all the time about how they can’t believe they’re actually running their own businesses.

To be honest, I was like that– totally questioning myself. Imposter syndrome came and lounged in my living room like an uninvited guest.

Thoughts like: Can I do this? Will I fail? Followed by a cascade of what-ifs.

Accept your new reality, accept that you’re now on your way to being a Mompreneur, or a work-from-home mom, and you’ll find the transition smooth and even entertaining.

There’s a bit of “Fake it ’til you make it,” but also, you can continue learning and bettering yourself. No need to wallow in your self-doubts and insecurities. The best thing is to get out there and give it a try!

2. Be Positive, Stay Positive:

Remember what I said about doubts earlier?

Turns out positivity is the enemy of doubt.

Maybe all you have is the skill. Let’s say you’re an amazing photographer, baker, or caregiver (child, elder, pet, etc.,), and while you’re sure of your skill, you doubt you have what it takes to manage a business.

I get that. Taking a skill and turning it into an enterprise is a large (and overwhelming!) part of the equation.

But moms: It’s not as hard as you think!

If you’ve got more money and less available time, you can delegate or outsource.

If you’ve got time and less money, just start small and grow – open an Etsy shop, offer your services either on social media or by getting out there and networking, and grow from there.

The most important thing is to believe you can do it, you have what it takes, and you’ll succeed.

Stay positive, and you’ll be surprised at how productive you get!

3. You’re Imperfect, Not Defective:

Yup! I said it. You’re not perfect, and that’s alright!

(Me neither, okay?)

That said, don’t worry your beautiful heart over all your flaws– look on the bright side! If you were already perfect, you’d not be able to grow or improve.

Are you terrible at multitasking? That’s fine– truth be told, I’m just as bad. Turns out multitasking isn’t the superpower we think it is. We weren’t meant for constant task-switching.

You’re not always able to seamlessly balance your work and family life? Don’t beat yourself up, you’re no robot. (I have another article on the site all about priorization, if that helps!)

The great thing about imperfection is that you can always grow and always improve.

Your imperfections are opportunities, not impediments. The quicker you realize this, the more effective your work will actually be!

4. Mompreneur Guilt? Beat It:

As working moms, as busy moms, as mompreneurs, we’re all familiar with the busy mom guilt.

You worry your children don’t get enough of your attention because you’re too busy.

Suddenly you start to drop a few of the plates you’ve been frantically spinning.

Take a few plates off the table, if you can. I know it’s difficult, but prioritize what’s important for your family in this season.

5. Don’t Overworry, Act:

Take it from an Overthinking Worry Queen:

You know what happens when you spend so much time just worrying?

You become a thinker, not a doer. And no action spells out no growth.

Change your mind, the way you think, the way you react.

There’s a problem? Curate a list of solutions, act, and adjust along the way.

I saw this Instagram reel once and it was all about how the winner is one who adapts.

Losers seem to wait for the perfect conditions before they think they’ll act. I discovered that I have sat on the loser’s bench for far too long.

Instead of continually overthinking things, I just needed to take action. Imperfect action is better than nothing.

Maybe that’s what you need to do, too.

6. Be Connected:

If like many of us “mind-your-business” moms, you like being in your own space, this may be the hardest mentality shift yet.

But really, while it’s still not mandatory, you cannot ignore the benefits of joining or being in a support group or system.

I’m talking about a place to vent your frustrations, find solace with people experiencing the same thing as you, bringing up the same niche problems, brainstorming, and providing solutions together.

It may sound like a tough job, but once you take the first step, that’s the hardest part.

Accept support, find like-minded moms in a similar situation, and connect. You’ll be surprised by how your mentality will shift toward the positive– and you might even gain a few meaningful friendships along the way!

7. Establish Your Purpose:

Let’s face it: The difference in mentality between a mom who has no end goal and one who has one (or a few) will be huge.

I mean, imagine there’s you who wants your catering business to be the one-stop in your street and 4 streets down the block, and there’s mom B who’s just starting a business because she has time and nothing to do.

I mean it’s clear who’ll experience faster growth, both in the business side and in mentality.

If you haven’t already established your long-term goals, sit down and ask yourself where you want to be in 5 years, how big you want to be, or how free you want to be.

It’s important to make family goals as well as business goals. I find that intentionality is my only way through to reach the major goals in my life– coasting on default will only wind me up where everyone else is.
